Bedford Hall Methodist School is a primary academy in Wigan with 246 pupils and is part of the Acorn Trust. The primary academy used their Salix Finance interest-free loan of £44,630 for their boilers and heating system and £4,648 for their roofing combined with £254,190 EFA grant funding to improve their learning environment.
Bedford Hall Methodist School successfully applied to the Education Funding Agency’s (EFA) Academies Capital Maintenance Fund (ACMF) in 2014 for their boiler replacements, and in 2015 applied for the EFA’s Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) for roof improvements.
Both these successful bids led to the academy receiving £254,190 in total from the EFA. Annual energy savings of £11,266 associated with the projects gave the academy the opportunity to combine their grant funding with a cost neutral Salix Finance interest-free loan of £49,278. The interest-free loan contributed to the total cost of the replacement boiler, maintenance system and roof replacement.
Salix provides a loan repayment model, which enables capital funding to be recycled allowing more projects and academies to receive funding.
“The heating has improved immensely and we now have zoning controls which have allowed us to have greater control of which rooms gets heated for before and after school clubs. The children and staff have appreciated a warmer and more comfortable school, and can now focus on achieving their potential”
Joanne Buckley – Acorn Trust Business Manager
