Genie Cleaning Services Ltd – Case Study

Girls Secondary school in Birmingham

The school is an all girls secondary school with pupils aged 11-18 in the South Birmingham area. The cleaning contract is for 160.5 hours per week term time plus additional out of term periodic deep cleaning. . The contract involves the cleaning of all areas of the school including teaching areas, toilets/ changing rooms, sports facilities and offices including periodic window and carpet cleaning.
We took over the contract from Birmingham City Council in April 2010, transferring 13 staff via TUPE and saving the school around £14,000 per annum on their cleaning costs.

Cleaning and Performance Management

We were awarded the contract due to unsatisfactory cleaning performance, poor communications and the absence of a supervisor. At the start of the contract we introduced new cleaning equipment and cleaning chemicals to the site, all cleaners were trained on the use of the equipment and cleaning methods. We introduced a new role of on-site Cleaning Supervisor to manage and support the cleaning team, the Area Manager visited the school twice per week to support the Cleaning Supervisor while the role was established. Within two months the cleaning standards were significantly improved. A mutually agreed Service Level Agreement was put in place to measure standards on an ongoing basis.

Strong working relationships

During the mobilisation of the contract we worked closely with the Site Manager and built up a good relationship and open channels of communication, he was, and remains, happy with the standards of cleaning. In our experience a close working relationship between us Genie Cleaning Services and the client is key to the efficient running of the contract.
We held the cleaning contract at this school for two years. We have since twice won the contract back as they were not happy with the standards of the current contractor. We held the contract for two years and have recently successfully re-tendered for the contract until August 2018.
